Truck Inspection Stations – When to enter

You’ve rented a truck from Bristol, now you’re driving along the highway and there’s a truck inspection station ahead with the lights flashing to enter, what do you do? A lot of renters are not sure if they need to enter or not.  We’ve made a simple list of those Bristol vehicles that are required to enter for you.

Here are the Bristol vehicles that are REQUIRED to enter truck inspection/weigh stations:

Vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) of 4,500 kgs or more that are being used for business/commercial use.
For our Bristol fleet that includes;

  1.  Business or commercial use of 20 and 24 foot straight trucks
  2.  Business or commercial use 20 and 24 foot flatbed trucks
  3.  Business or commercial use of 18 and 20 foot refrigerated trucks
  4.  Business or commercial use of 1 ton pick up trucks – all Dodge Ram 3500s and Ford F350s

Renters must note that anyone renting any of the above vehicles for business/commercial reasons MUST posses their own CVOR (Commercial Vehicle Operators Registration) number.

Here’s Bristol trucks that are NOT REQUIRED to enter truck inspection/weigh stations:

  1. Personal/Residential Moves using a 20 and 24 foot trucks
  2. Personal/Residential Moves/Business/Commercial use of a Cube van
  3. Personal/Residential Moves/Business/Commercial use of a Cargo van
  4. Personal/Residential Moves/Business/Commercial use of a 1 ton, 1/2 ton and 1/4 ton pick up trucks (example Ford F150 and F250)
  5. Personal Use/Residential Moves use of a 1 ton pick truck
  6. Passenger Van Rental (11 & 15 passenger buses)

What Documents are required for an inspection station?

  1. Bristol rental agreement
  2. Valid driver’s license
  3. Vehicle registration
  4. Valid insurance slip
  5. Vehicle safety document
  6. Renter’s CVOR if being used for business purposes
  7. Daily log book (maybe exempt if driven less than 160 kms radius of start of the day and return the same location at the end of the day)

407 ETR Fees to Increase February 1, 2019

Many find driving the 407 ETR a time saver and, according to the 407 ETR, it can save a commuter from 20 – 60 minutes per trip, if you’re willing to pay for the kilometres driven. Also announced by the 407 is the increase in annual trips on the roadway from 71.9 million per year in 1999 to over 125 million per year in 2017.

Over the last year the 407 ETR has completed upgrades to the roadway that includes;

  • Updating its roadside technology
  • Adding new bridges
  • Adding new lands in the east-end
  • Resurfacing many kilometres

Now a fee increase is on its way February 1, 2019. These fees can vary depending on length of trip, the zone your travel, time of day, and other factors.

The increase in fees include the “New Camera Charges”. Those fees are up from $4.15 per entry to $4.20. The annual transponder lease fee is up $1.00 per year from $23.50 to $24.50 for light duty vehicles. Though the most notable increase is in the kms driven and the zones.

Reminder to our valued customers, when renting a vehicle and using the 407 ETR, the fees, including the non-transponder fee, toll fee, trip charge, and an administration fee will be added to your rental contract.

Making Bristol a Safer Place

Our Managers recently took part in re-certifying and brushing up on their First Aid, CPR and AED skills.

New Distracted Driving Penalties in Ontario

Ontario just rolled out new fines and suspensions for Distracting Driving on January 1st, 2019. Here’s what you need to know;

What is Distracted Driving?

Distracted driving is considered any activity that takes your focus off the road, even when you’re sitting stopped at a red light. These activities include;

  • Using any electronic device; making or accepting phone calls, texting/emailing, reading, watching videos, checking directions, and changing music.
  • Eating and drinking.
  • Grooming or applying make up.
  • Reading documents, papers or books.
  • Typing routes or destinations into a GPS.
  • Adjusting Entertainment systems.
  • Looking for or reaching for a fallen/moving item in your vehicle.
  • Simply holding a device in your hand.

The Insurance Bureau of Canada states that;

  • Drivers are 23 more times likely to be involved in an accident while texting and driving.
  • In Canada, distracted driving is the number one risk on the road, 8 of 10 collisions are caused by a driver who is distracted.
  • If convicted for distracting driving you can expect your insurance premiums to rise.

These are the new penalties as of January 1st, 2019 according to Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation;

Drivers with A to G licences

  • First conviction:
    • a fine of up to $1,000 if a summons is received or if you fight the ticket in court and lose
    • three demerit points
    • 3-day suspension
  • Second conviction
    • a fine of up to $2,000 if a summons is received or if you fight the ticket in court and lose
    • six demerit points
    • 7-day suspension
  • Third and any further conviction(s)
    • a fine of up to $3,000 if a summons is received or if you fight the ticket in court and lose
    • six demerit points
    • 30-day suspension

Novice drivers

If you hold a G1, G2, M1 or M2 licence, and are convicted of distracted driving, you’ll face the same fines as drivers with A to G licences. But you won’t receive any demerit points.

Instead of demerit points you’ll face longer suspensions:

  • a 30-day licence suspension for a first conviction
  • a 90-day licence suspension for a second conviction
  • cancellation of your licence and removal from the Graduated Licensing System (GLS) for a third conviction
    • to get your licence back you’d have to redo the GLS program

Tips for avoiding Distracted Driving

  • Be an attentive driver, focus only on driving.
  • Set your phone to “Driving Mode” to avoid the temptation.
  • Make all calls or send any communication out before you leave.
  • Enter your destination into your GPS before heading out.
  • Secure all loose items or gear before hitting the road to avoid them moving while driving.
  • Adjust seats, mirrors, temperature controls and sound system while still in park.
  • Enlist your passengers to navigate, or change controls of radio, climate etc.
  • Don’t eat and drive – eat first before you leave, if you must eat, pull over.
  • Turn down the music.
  • Take regular breaks on long trips.

Bristol Toy Drive 2018

Our annual Toy Drive kicked off on December 1st.  As usual, our staff was up to the task! All our toy donations were delivered this year to the Richmond Hill Salvation Army Toy Centre.  The staff and volunteers at the Salvation Army were amazing and so very grateful.

Our annual toy drive has been quite a success, again!  We sincerely thank all of the Bristol staff that donated to our drive, we couldn’t do it without you!

New Location in Pickering!

Well, we’ve done it again. We’ve welcomed another location to our Bristol family.  This time we’ve opened in Pickering, ON.
Our newest rental office is located at 2059 Bayly Street in Pickering, which is at the corner of Bayley and Church Street.

New Location Open in Brampton

Our newest location is officially OPEN for business.  Brampton is a booming community, particularly in the east side of the city.  So, we’ve answered our clients requests with a new branch located in the Bramalea area of Queen and Airport Roads.  Our address is 6 Tracey Blvd, and we are neighbours with Key Storage.  The branch is brand new inside and has plenty of parking.

We are pleased to announce that our long-term employee, Victor Alimena is the branch’s manager.  Victor has years of rental experience in the Brampton area and with Bristol Car and Truck Rentals.  He has a wealth of knowledge of our diverse rental fleet, and is ready to take your reservation.

New Appointments and Advancements

We love to report this kind of news.  Bristol is growing and moving forward, and therefore so are our employees.  Over the past month we’ve had a few new appointments within our company to share.

We are excited to announce the new opening of our Bramalea Location in July 2018.  This branch will be opening in the Queen/Airport area of Brampton on Tracey Blvd.
We’ve chosen one of our seasoned veterans to run this branch, Victor Alimena, and have promoted him to Branch Manager of our newest rental centre.

2018 Bristol Car and Truck Rental’s Managers’ Conference

This year at Bristol Car and Truck Rentals we came together again for our annual Managers’ Conference at Hockley Valley Resort.

As always, our team was in full learning mode with priority to preserve and continually improve on our high standards of customer service, as well as creating a rental experience that is second to none.

On day two we welcomed a guest speaker with an outstanding session focused on Leadership.  Our Managers left learning a lot about themselves and where Bristol is heading as a team!  Our future looks bright, and we thank all those who took part and actively participated in the sessions.
